A 38-year-old man has died following an attack by a 13-foot-long Great White shark in Western Australia. According to local police, the incident occurred shortly before 10:00 AM local time on Saturday in the northwestern waters off Rottnest Island—a popular destination near the city of Perth. Police stated that the man was attacked by the shark while he was in the water. He was quickly brought to a nearby jetty by boat from the scene of the incident.

There, paramedics and police attempted to save him by administering CPR; however, they were ultimately unable to revive him. This news was reported by BBC Online. Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development confirmed that they have verified the victim was indeed attacked by a Great White shark. The agency has urged anyone entering the waters in that area to exercise extreme caution.

According to Australian government statistics, approximately 1,300 shark attacks have been recorded in Australia since 1791. Of these incidents, more than 260 have resulted in fatalities.
