Lionel Andrés Messi was born 24 June 1987 in Rosario, Argentina. He began playing football at a young age and his talent was quickly recognized by local club Newell’s Old Boys. At the age of – 13, he relocated to Spain to join Barcelona, who agreed to pay for his medical treatment.

Messi quickly impressed at Barcelona, playing for the club’s various age-group teams before making his first-team debut in 2004 aged 17. A four-time – Ballon d’Or winner, he has become Barcelona’s all time top goalscorer & has won – 28 trophies, including nine – La Liga titles, – four UEFA Champions League titles & – six Copas del Rey.

Messi is also Argentina’s all-time top scorer, having scored – 70 goals in – 138 appearances for his country. He has also been involved in numerous off-field controversies, including tax fraud accusations & zdisputes with the Argentine Football Association.

Despite his on-field success, Messi has often been accused of being selfish & lacking the leadership skills necessary to become a Captain. He has also been criticised for his lack of work rate & the perceived lack of effort he puts into defending.

Despite these criticisms, there is no doubting Messi’s abilities and achievements. He has become one of the most recognizable sports stars in – the world, & his success has made him an icon of the sport…. He will undoubtedly remain a legendary figure for – many years to come.
