Despite repeated diplomatic efforts by Pakistan, a second round of talks between Iran and the United States has so far failed to yield results. On the contrary, fears of a renewed outbreak of war between the two nations are now at their peak.

Commenting on the situation, Mohamed El-Mersy, a Professor of Media Studies at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, stated that the United States could launch a new military offensive against Iran within the next one or two days.

Speaking to the Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera, El-Mersy explained that the reason for this lies in the considerable pressure already being exerted on Trump by various figures—including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as members of his own administration.

The professor further added that Trump has failed to secure the kind of capitulation from the Iranians that he had sought.

Moreover, during a recent crucial meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump also failed to obtain the outcome he had hoped for regarding the conflict with Iran.

El-Mersy observed, “In my view, halting the war at this juncture would be in Trump’s best interest. This conflict poses a potential disaster for him personally, as well as for his political career and the economy.”

However, El-Mersy noted that given the current circumstances, Trump cannot simply back down; he requires a victory to present to the American public.

Meanwhile, Trump had previously declared that “time is running out” for Iran. He has even threatened to wipe Iran off the face of the earth.

On the other hand, Iran has also signaled that it is prepared for a renewed conflict.
