Issuing a warning to Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that “very bad times” await the country if a peace agreement is not reached soon. He issued this warning during a telephone interview with the French broadcaster BFMTV.

The U.S. President further added that it is also in their (Iran’s) interest to reach an agreement.

On Friday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that his government had received a message from the Trump administration expressing interest in renewed negotiations. However, he cautioned that a sense of “distrust” still lingers regarding Washington’s true intentions.

Notably, the United States had previously launched attacks on Iran on two separate occasions while discussions regarding the country’s nuclear program were still underway.

Meanwhile, a report by The New York Times suggests that President Trump may be poised to make major decisions regarding Iran. He could decide to break the current standoff by authorizing heavier bombing—and with this possibility in mind, his top advisors have already drafted plans to resume military operations.

Advisors have indicated that Trump has not yet made a final decision regarding his next course of action. However, officials from concerned nations are actively working to reach a compromise; they are taking steps to persuade Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

If this is achieved, Trump would be able to declare victory. He would be able to convince skeptical American voters that this costly and deadly military campaign in Iran was a success.
