Trump has started an ‘unnecessary war’ with Iran: Obama

Former US President Barack Obama has sharply criticized the anti-Iran war policy of current President Donald Trump. Describing the conflict as ‘unnecessary,’ Obama stated that there was no demand for such a war. He made these remarks while addressing a campaign rally ahead of the upcoming midterm elections on November 3.

Speaking at a rally in Cleveland, Ohio, Obama remarked that the current president has made a series of poor decisions—most notably, initiating an ‘unnecessary war’ that no one had asked for.

The prospect of a conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran is already impacting the global economy. Tensions have driven up oil prices on the international market. Concerns regarding fuel supplies have also emerged, as an attack on Iran could lead Tehran to effectively block shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—a vital maritime route through which vast quantities of crude oil are transported.

In response to Obama’s comments, Trump posted on the social media platform ‘Truth Social’ on Sunday, launching a harsh critique of the former president and referencing the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.

Trump labeled Obama an ‘extremely incompetent’ president, alleging that he provided Iran with billions of dollars and paved the way for the country to pursue nuclear weapons.

The 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran was reached during Obama’s presidency. Under the terms of the deal, certain sanctions against Iran were eased in exchange for limitations on its nuclear program. Trump, however, has long been a vocal opponent of the agreement.

This exchange between Obama and Trump, occurring in the lead-up to the midterm elections, underscores the significance of the Iran issue in US domestic politics. Furthermore, the potential economic consequences of a conflict, volatility in energy markets, and broader foreign policy decisions have emerged as key topics in the electoral debate.
