Beijing has proposed establishing an economic corridor connecting Bangladesh to China via Myanmar. The objective of this corridor is to expand the scope of Bangladesh’s economy, boost trade and economic transactions, and strengthen the multimodal transport system.
Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, disclosed this information at a press briefing following the meeting between Prime Minister Tarek Rahman and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Friday morning.

He stated that the Prime Minister and President Xi Jinping held detailed discussions regarding connectivity. During these talks, the proposal to create an economic corridor from Bangladesh to China via Myanmar was put forward. Both nations agreed that this corridor would facilitate the expansion of Bangladesh’s economic activities, increase regional trade, and enhance the multimodal transport system.

Mahdi Amin noted that China expressed interest in modernizing the Chittagong Port. Discussions focused on upgrading the port’s capabilities to transform it into a regional hub, enabling it to play a role in the commercial activities of the entire region rather than just Bangladesh. Simultaneously, Beijing showed interest in cooperating to transform Mongla Port into a more modern, efficient, and service-oriented facility.

He added that a decision was made to strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations by enhancing cooperation in culture, media, technology, knowledge exchange, and employment. Joint initiatives will be undertaken in these sectors to foster communication and mutual understanding among the people of both countries.

Regarding the education sector, the spokesperson mentioned that China has pledged support for the initiative to prioritize Mandarin language education as a third language in Bangladesh. The country will also assist in the development of technical and vocational education, expressing readiness to provide teachers and necessary infrastructure support for Mandarin language instruction.

Mahdi Amin also reported proposals for cooperation in the health sector, specifically concerning robotic surgery, the establishment of modern hospitals, and advanced medical technology. He noted that Beijing expressed interest in simplifying visa procedures to make it easier for Bangladeshis to travel to China for medical treatment. Regarding the Rohingya crisis, he stated that Bangladesh remains steadfast in its position on safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation. China has assured its assistance in facilitating dialogue and communication with Myanmar on this matter if necessary, and discussions on the issue will be taken forward in the future.

Mahdi Amin further mentioned that an agreement has been reached to establish a ‘Two-Plus-Two’ dialogue framework between Bangladesh and China covering foreign affairs and defense. Under this arrangement, representatives from the foreign and defense ministries of both countries will engage in regular dialogue; the details of this framework are currently being finalized.

He noted that during the meeting, China reaffirmed its respect for Bangladesh’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and both nations agreed to respect each other’s independent foreign policies.

Speaking on international cooperation, the spokesperson stated that collaboration between Bangladesh and China in various multilateral forums, including the United Nations, will be further strengthened. Dhaka expressed gratitude for China’s support during Bangladesh’s recent victory in a UN election. Additionally, it was conveyed during the meeting that China would welcome a future application by Bangladesh for BRICS membership.
