Dr. Zubaida Rahman, wife of the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, participated in an annual high-level meeting of global women leaders held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York. On Wednesday, she joined top female diplomats and heads of state from around the world at this special gathering at the UN headquarters. The meeting was organized with a commitment to strengthening women’s empowerment, equal rights, and leadership in society. UN Women announced this in a press release.
The meeting was jointly organized by the President of the 81st UN General Assembly, Dr. Khalilur Rahman, and UN Women. Sima Bahous, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, delivered the keynote address. She emphasized the need to ensure women’s active participation at every stage of policymaking for peace and sustainable development. She noted that women leaders across the globe are playing a pivotal role in breaking down existing barriers and building inclusive societies.
Sima Bahous highlighted that, according to the ‘Gender Snapshot’ report, women currently lead only one in seven countries worldwide. Furthermore, at the current pace of progress, it would take the world another 171 years to achieve full gender equality. She urged for an acceleration of efforts to meet the 2030 targets and end this long wait. Concurrently, world leaders expressed support for establishing strong female leadership in the design of artificial intelligence and modern technologies, as well as for the election of a female Secretary-General at the United Nations.
