Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has joined the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom as a ‘Distinguished Fellow.’ He has also become a member of the institution’s ‘World Leaders Circle.’ The university announced this development on Friday. This marks his first major institutional appointment since leaving the office of Prime Minister.
The Blavatnik School describes the World Leaders Circle as an international network of former heads of government. The initiative aims to engage experienced leaders in promoting good governance globally and training the next generation of policymakers.
Other members of this initiative include former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. They meet regularly to discuss emerging global challenges.
Professor Ngaire Woods, Dean of the Blavatnik School, stated, “We are delighted to welcome Justin Trudeau as a Distinguished Fellow and a member of the World Leaders Circle. It is a platform where leaders can exchange ideas and foster international cooperation.”
She added that Trudeau brings a decade of public service experience to the initiative.
Trudeau, who became Prime Minister of Canada in 2015, stepped down in 2025. He noted that the world has undergone significant geopolitical and technological shifts during his time in office.
Trudeau emphasized that responsible leadership is essential to address challenges such as a changing global order and the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, he stressed the urgent need to renew commitments toward restoring public trust in democratic institutions.
Regarding his new role, he said, “I look forward to leveraging my experience, exchanging perspectives with other leaders, and working with the next generation of government officials and policymakers.” ‘I want to work on how governments can adapt to change and build a more hopeful, inclusive, and prosperous future for all.’
