American journalist and filmmaker Abby Martin has remarked that Israel’s military campaign and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip have brought about a profound shift in global political consciousness, perceptions of human rights, and views on the international order. In her view, the world can never return to how it was before the events in Gaza. Furthermore, she has linked the cause of Palestinian independence to the broader, collective struggle for the liberation of oppressed people worldwide.
Martin made these observations while speaking at the concluding event of American rapper Macklemore’s pro-Palestine concert tour in Paris, France. Addressing an audience of thousands, she described Gaza as one of the most critical moral and political testing grounds in the world today.
“Gaza has changed the world—it has changed each and every one of us,” Martin stated. “It has laid bare where everyone truly stands. There is no going back to the world as it existed before this struggle.”
According to Martin, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has not only highlighted the oppression faced by Palestinians but has also raised fundamental questions regarding international politics, the media, human rights, and the actual application of international law. In particular, the true stance of Western nations—which often profess a commitment to human rights and justice—has been exposed to many.
Addressing the artists, intellectuals, and cultural figures present, she emphasized that remaining silent on the situation in Gaza is no longer an option. Everyone must make a choice: to stand against injustice or to play a role in sustaining the status quo.
Regarding the role of artists, Martin urged them to decide whether they will continue to desensitize the public or choose to stand for change. She called for the use of culture and art as tools to shape public opinion against injustice.
Broadening the scope of the discussion on Palestinian independence, Martin asserted that the liberation of Palestine is inseparable from the global struggle of all people against hegemony, oppression, and the distortion of truth. In other words, she views the struggle for Palestinian independence and the right to self-determination as part of a broader global movement for justice.
She also highlights the cultural boycotts and solidarity movements for Palestine that have emerged in Western nations. According to her, these initiatives help shape public opinion by transcending conventional political and media narratives. She further suggests that artists and cultural figures should consider the ethical responsibilities inherent in their work.
Abby Martin has long been a critic of United States foreign policy, military intervention, and the actions of Israel. Her documentary, Gaza Fights for Freedom, depicts the lives of Palestinians, the blockade, and their resistance.
In an earlier interview with Current Affairs magazine, Martin stated that the question of Palestine is no longer an isolated issue; rather, it has moved to the heart of the collective liberation of humanity. In her view, the situation in Gaza and Palestine is deeply intertwined with the collective freedom and emancipation of all people.
Martin believes that the global solidarity and political awareness surrounding Gaza have underscored the importance of fostering connections among people across different nations and taking a unified stand against oppression.
Her remarks at the event in Paris make it clear that she does not view the question of Palestinian independence merely as a matter of political rights over a specific territory; instead, she considers it an integral part of a wider, global struggle for justice, human dignity, and human liberation.
