Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov harshly criticized the United States and Israel regarding the issues of Iran and Venezuela during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. He stated that the hegemony of a single superpower has become dangerous for everyone.
According to Lavrov, nations in the Global South and East are establishing themselves as “sovereign centers of development.” This is paving the way for a more just and multipolar world order.
He described the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, members of his family, and several figures within the country’s military and political leadership as “another unacceptable manifestation of coercive dictatorship.”
The Russian Foreign Minister noted that during major military operations by the US and Israel, attacks were also carried out against Iranian nuclear facilities that fall under the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He claimed that these attacks have caused “irreparable damage” to the nuclear non-proliferation regime overseen by the UN-backed nuclear watchdog.
Lavrov also leveled accusations against various European governments. He claimed that, alongside supplying weapons to Ukraine, these governments are facilitating attacks on civilians and attempting to obstruct peace negotiations. However, he acknowledged that many parties—including the Trump administration in Washington—are showing interest in peace talks.
In his speech, Lavrov also highlighted the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of the Nuremberg Trials following the defeat of Nazi Germany. He remarked that not everyone has heeded the lessons of those trials. He further accused European Union governments of tolerating “Ukrainian Nazism” and imposing restrictions on the use of the Russian language.
