Leah Stuart, a 34-year-old teacher, was attacked by the shark on the morning of June 13 while swimming at Coogee Beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs. She was hospitalized in critical condition with severe injuries for over two weeks, and doctors ultimately had to amputate her left arm. In her first interview since recovering, she recounted how the shark had come within just 30 centimeters of her face, charging at her with its jaws wide open. Being right-handed, she made a split-second decision to put her left arm in harm’s way to protect her face.
To shield her face, she repeatedly punched the shark hard in the mouth with her left arm. Recalling that terrifying moment, she described the sensation as akin to fighting a dinosaur; the shark’s body felt as hard as a wall. The shark mauled her, inflicting severe bites on her left arm and thigh.
