Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has announced her decision to freeze her eggs as part of a fertility treatment process. She also shared her initial experiences with the procedure in posts on social media.
The 36-year-old Ocasio-Cortez posted video clips on social media yesterday, Sunday. A few hours later, she appeared on ABC News’ This Week program, where she stated that she is not “completely ruling out” the possibility of running for president in the future.
In the videos shared online, Ocasio-Cortez is seen administering an injection to herself and describing her experiences with the process. She subsequently answered questions regarding the cost of egg freezing, the medical procedure, storage methods, and the state of reproductive healthcare in the United States.
In her interview with ABC News, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her desire to normalize public conversation about the egg-freezing process.
She emphasized that such discussions are crucial, “especially in the current political climate.”
The Democratic congresswoman said, “This administration [the Trump government] is denying women across the country access to reproductive healthcare services—ranging from abortion rights to the ability to have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. As leaders, I believe it is important for us to speak about these issues and share our personal experiences and information about the process.”
In an earlier Instagram post, Ocasio-Cortez acknowledged that while there were “political risks” involved in going public with this matter (egg freezing), she wanted to share the information with the public.
A recent opinion poll indicated that Ocasio-Cortez is among the figures the public would like to see as potential candidates in the 2028 presidential election. When asked whether she would run for office, Ocasio-Cortez laughed and tried to sidestep a direct answer.
“I am currently focused on winning the midterm elections,” Ocasio said. “Right now, I am running for a seat in Congress.”
However, when pressed further about her interest in the matter and whether a presidential bid was a realistic possibility, she stated, “I haven’t ruled out the possibility. I am truly overwhelmed and grateful for the tremendous support I’m receiving from the outside.”
Ocasio added, “Our responsibility is to stay focused on the midterm elections, rather than on our own personal ambitions or future plans.”
Ocasio-Cortez was also asked about the possibility of challenging Chuck Schumer, the top Democrat in the U.S. Senate, for his seat. She replied, “Anything is possible.”
Midterm elections in the United States take place every two years, occurring halfway through the U.S. President’s four-year term.
This year’s midterm elections are scheduled for early November. Voting will take place for all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as for approximately one-third of the 100 seats in the Senate.
