Russia could launch an attack on one of the countries belonging to the Western military alliance, NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin might attempt a limited-scale attack within the next few years to test the resolve and unity of the alliance’s member states. CNN reported this information citing recent US intelligence assessments.
US intelligence assessments outline several scenarios involving potential escalation by Russia, ranging from cyberattacks to limited military incursions. The objective of such actions could be to test NATO’s unity and the commitment of member states to “Article 5.”
Under NATO’s Article 5, an attack on one member is considered an attack on all members. However, sources indicate that Russia might take actions that stop short of triggering a collective military response from NATO.
It remains unclear exactly how or when Putin might take such steps. However, according to one source, he could potentially target the Baltic states or Poland to escalate tensions. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on this recent intelligence assessment.
Sources further indicated that US and NATO officials believe Putin might decide to escalate tensions against NATO if he fails to find a way to exit the Ukraine war honorably. The potential timeframe for Putin to choose his next move extends from the present over the next few years.
Martin O’Donnell, a senior NATO military spokesperson, declined to comment on the classified intelligence assessment. However, he stated that NATO is “constantly considering and preparing for various potential scenarios.”
He added that NATO is monitoring the situation and remains ready for deterrence and defense as needed—a fact the alliance continues to demonstrate.
There have been several incidents of Russian incursions into NATO territory in recent years. Notably, last May, an explosive-laden drone struck a residential building in Romania while Russian forces were attacking a port near Ukraine, injuring two people. Earlier, in September, NATO fighter jets shot down multiple Russian drones after they violated Polish airspace during Russian attacks on Ukraine.
Additionally, an explosives-laden drone was discovered at a German airport last Wednesday night. A US defense official stationed in Europe told CNN that, according to US assessments, the drone belonged to a Russian intelligence agency. The official noted that the drone carried military-grade explosives.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday regarding the incident, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt remarked that while drone sightings and threats are “hybrid” issues seen in the past, the discovery of an explosives-equipped drone at an airport represents a new type of threat.
On Thursday, Dobrindt hinted at the possible involvement of a “foreign power” with the drone, though he did not provide further details.
Subsequently, Germany’s National Security Council met on Friday to discuss the airport incident.
This US intelligence assessment regarding Russia’s potential plans comes amidst growing concerns over the significant depletion of US ammunition stockpiles—partly due to the conflict involving Iran—and the rising number of civilian casualties in Ukraine caused by Russian long-range weapon strikes.
CNN previously reported that approximately 80 percent of the interceptor missiles for the THAAD system—a critical US missile defense asset—have already been expended. Similarly, about half of the interceptors for the Patriot defense system have been used.
Meanwhile, the United Nations reported a 60 percent increase in civilian casualties in Ukraine from Russian long-range weapon strikes between January and June of this year compared to the same period last year.
Earlier this week, at least 17 people were killed and dozens more injured in a single night by Russian ballistic and anti-ship missile strikes in Ukraine. According to CNN, Ukrainian defense systems failed to intercept any of the missiles launched in that attack.
Analysts have expressed concern that the anxiety surrounding dwindling stockpiles of critical ammunition and missile interceptors is influencing US planning for potential future conflicts. This includes the possibility of Putin escalating tensions with NATO or a potential war with China in the Pacific region.
President Donald Trump has personally expressed dissatisfaction in recent days regarding the depletion of US weapons stockpiles amidst a potential conflict with Iran.
Citing six sources, CNN reported that Trump raised this issue during a cabinet meeting at Camp David last week. However, on Thursday night, Trump stated on his Truth Social account that the United States possesses vast quantities of “ammunition and missiles.” This new US intelligence assessment has emerged at a time when US-led diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war have stalled.
The report notes that ongoing sanctions imposed by the US and Europe on Moscow have impacted the Russian economy. However, these measures have failed to halt Putin’s military campaign against Ukraine.
