Jill Biden, the wife of former U.S. President Joe Biden, has revealed that she was terrified by her husband’s demeanor during a presidential election debate in 2024. Jill feared that Joe Biden might have been suffering a stroke at that moment.
Jill shared these sentiments in an interview with CBS News. She stated, “I was scared. Because I had never seen Joe in such a state—neither before nor since.”
Jill added, “I don’t know what happened. As I watched, I thought—’Oh God, it looks like he’s having a stroke.’ I was absolutely terrified.”
During the debate against the 2024 Republican nominee, Donald Trump, the then-Democratic candidate Biden appeared overwhelmed. Following this, pressure mounted on him from within the Democratic party to withdraw his candidacy. Ultimately, he stepped aside from the election and endorsed the then-Vice President, Kamala Harris, as the party’s nominee.
Jill Biden gave the interview to Rita Braver for the CBS News program Sunday Morning. The interview is scheduled to air this coming Sunday.
Throughout Biden’s long political career—from his days as a Senator from Delaware to becoming President—Jill has consistently stood by her husband’s side. She was also widely regarded as one of Joe Biden’s most influential advisors. It is believed that she played a significant role in the decision for Biden to withdraw from the 2024 election.
Following that debate in June 2024—just months before the U.S. presidential election—concerns regarding the President’s fitness for office intensified further among Democrats.
At the time, Joe Biden’s campaign team firmly asserted that he would not withdraw his presidential candidacy and that he would participate in future debates against Trump.
Both Trump and Biden were vying for a second term as President. The debate between them featured heated exchanges on critical issues, including immigration, the economy, and abortion rights.
During the debate, Joe Biden’s voice sounded strained and hoarse. His campaign team stated at the time that this occurred because he was unwell. Furthermore, at one point, Biden was observed speaking incoherently.
