US President Donald Trump has arrived in China for a historic visit. The bilateral meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping commenced today, Thursday—at approximately 8:30 AM Bangladesh time—at the “Great Hall of the People” in the capital, Beijing.
BBC correspondent (Asia Business) Suranjana Tewari notes that the issue of de-escalating trade disputes between the two nations is likely to top the agenda. The two countries agreed to reduce these tensions last October. Under this understanding—which remains in effect until next November—China and the US have suspended the imposition of reciprocal tariffs.

China may signal its intention to increase purchases of American goods. Many analysts have dubbed this the “Five Bs”—meaning Beijing could boost its imports of Boeing aircraft, beef, and soybeans. The two leaders may also engage in detailed discussions regarding the establishment of trade and investment boards to foster future trade expansion.
According to analysts, Beijing has prepared to discuss the “Three Ts”: Tariffs, Technology, and Taiwan. China continues to claim Taiwan as its own territory—a stance that places Beijing at odds with Washington.
President Trump traveled to China accompanied by a delegation of trade-related officials and business leaders. Joining him in the meeting with Xi Jinping may be prominent figures such as Tim Cook, Elon Musk, and Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg.
The two world leaders are also expected to discuss the conflict in Iran and issues related to maritime security. This includes the strategic Strait of Hormuz—a vital maritime route for the transport of oil and LNG across Asia—particularly in the context of the Iran conflict.
The US President arrived in Beijing late last night, Wednesday. His previous visit to China took place in 2017, during his first term in office.
Upon his arrival at the airport yesterday, President Trump was accorded a red-carpet welcome by several top Chinese officials, including Vice President Han Zheng.
Before departing the airport, Trump told reporters, “We are the two superpowers.” In terms of military power, we are the most powerful country in the world.
