US President Donald Trump stated that US officials held a three-hour meeting with an Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York. It is believed that this could open a new door for negotiations to end the conflict that has been ongoing for nearly seven months.
Although Trump described the meeting as positive, he did not clarify exactly who from the US and Iran participated in it. According to him, significant differences of opinion still exist between the two sides regarding the terms of any potential agreement. Indian media outlet India Today reported this news.
Standing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said that US officials had held a three-hour meeting with the Iranian delegation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session.
Trump said, “It was a great meeting… reaching an agreement is in their own interest.”
Regarding the possibility of ending the conflict through an agreement, he remarked, “I cannot even imagine why Iran wouldn’t make a deal.”
Speaking about the conflict that began in late February, Trump added, “There is one alternative: total destruction. And the other alternative is potential prosperity. The country could become a great nation.”
Trump invited Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff to comment on the meeting; however, he did not provide definitive information regarding exactly who participated in the discussions.
Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are currently in New York to attend the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. They are part of Iran’s main delegation.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, US official Steve Witkoff said, “I am very optimistic at this moment.”
Later, Trump said, “They had a very good meeting. Now let’s see what happens. But undoubtedly, reaching an agreement is in their interest.”
However, Iran has not yet confirmed that such a meeting took place.
