Russia has expressed strong support for India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced this support during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Lavrov stated that representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America needs to be increased within the Security Council. He also voiced support for Brazil’s permanent membership alongside India’s.
However, he opposed the inclusion of any new Western nations as permanent members of the Security Council. He was particularly critical of Germany and Japan, accusing them of moving towards militarism.
Meanwhile, Mauritius’s Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful also reiterated his country’s support for India’s permanent membership. He remarked that India deserves permanent membership in alignment with its constructive role in global affairs.
Currently, among the 15 members of the Security Council, five—China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States—hold permanent membership and possess veto power. Structural reform of the Security Council requires an amendment to the UN Charter, a process that has effectively remained deadlocked for a long time.
