Hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters gathered in Liverpool, UK, to demand a halt to arms sales to Israel. The protest was organized to coincide with the Labour Party’s annual conference in the city.
This was the first conference held since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister of the UK.
The protesters demanded that the sanctions recently imposed by the UK government on West Bank settlements be extended to cover Israel as a whole.
Britain has announced its toughest-ever package of sanctions against Israel, targeting trade, financing, and services that facilitate the expansion of illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.
In September 2024, the Starmer government suspended approximately 30 licenses for the export of UK-made arms. This decision was based on a review indicating a clear risk that these weapons could be used in Gaza in a manner constituting a serious violation of international humanitarian law.
However, the same government also approved the supply of military equipment worth $169 million to Israel for the subsequent three-month period.
