The funeral and burial of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, may take place this month. Several Iranian media outlets have reported this information, according to Al Jazeera.
Ayatollah Khamenei, along with dozens of the country’s top leaders and military officials, was killed in US and Israeli airstrikes on February 28. However, his burial has not yet been completed, even months after his death.
Following Ayatollah Khamenei’s death, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, assumed the role of Supreme Leader last March. Iranian organizers have stated that the funeral and burial will take place after the tenth day of the first month of the Islamic calendar—likely on June 25 or 26.
Earlier, Iranian media reported that the funeral rites would be held in Tehran and Qom, followed by a ceremony in Mashhad, in northeastern Iran. Mashhad, his birthplace, is also the planned site for his burial.
Plans for Ayatollah Khamenei’s burial have been repeatedly postponed due to security concerns amidst the ongoing war.
