Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn is once again at the center of attention at the Cannes Film Festival. Late Monday night, his new film, Her Private Hell, took the audience by storm. A neon-hued psychological thriller blending nudity, bloody murder, psychological trauma, and twisted relationships, the film ultimately received a standing ovation that lasted for a full seven minutes.
Following the screening, lead actress Sophie Thatcher was overcome with emotion and burst into tears. Meanwhile, filmmaker Refn walked through the entire theater, encouraging the audience to applaud even louder.
Ecstasy on a Rain-Soaked Night
The film’s premiere took place last night at the Grand Palais in Cannes. Amidst heavy rain, stars including Charles Melton, Sophie Thatcher, Havana Rose Liu, and Kristine Froseth arrived on the red carpet. As soon as the screening concluded, the entire theater rose to its feet and began to applaud. In that moment, Sophie Thatcher could not hold back her tears.
“I Was Dead for 25 Minutes”
After the prolonged ovation, Nicolas Winding Refn took the microphone to share a personal experience. He revealed that a few years ago, he had come to the brink of death for 25 minutes. He was subsequently revived through electrotherapy.

In Refn’s words: “An experience like that changes a person. Now I know that the time we have to live is very limited. Therefore, I want to fully savor every single moment of life.”
Breaking the somber atmosphere, he then reverted to his signature style, playfully joking about the actors’ “stunning presence.” He drew a wave of laughter from the audience, particularly with his comments regarding Charles Melton’s physique.

The Film’s Story
In Her Private Hell, Sophie stars as a psychologically fragile film celebrity. A new crisis erupts in her life when her closest friend marries her father.
Concurrently, a terrifying spree of serial killings begins in the city. A mysterious killer—known as “The Leather Man”—begins targeting and murdering young women. Before being murdered, the victims scream out just a single word: “Daddy!”
Meanwhile, Charles plays the role of a soldier whose daughter goes missing. Thus begins his quest for revenge.
“Politicians Have Ruined the World”
Towards the end of his speech, Refn remarked that the cinema hall remains the last place where people can truly come together. In his words: “Politicians have ruined the world, instigated wars, and plundered people’s wealth. Now, only art can unite humanity.”
Refn further added: “Cinema is not merely about sitting alone watching something on an iPhone; cinema is about sitting together and sharing a collective experience.”
A Cannes Journey with Neon
Behind this film stands Neon. In recent years, it has emerged as one of the most successful distribution companies at the Cannes Film Festival. Although Her Private Hell was screened outside the main competition section, it has already become one of the most talked-about films of the festival.
Refn previously won the Best Director award at Cannes for his film Drive. Later, he found himself at the center of controversy for making films that elicited divisive reactions—such as Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon.
After a long hiatus of ten years, the Danish filmmaker has finally returned to the big screen. And with his return, he has once again created a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival.
