Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, the renowned South African human rights lawyer and judge, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. She received this honor in recognition of her outstanding contributions to strengthening international law, ensuring justice for war crimes, and establishing global peace. Today, Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee officially announced her name as the recipient of the 125th Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway.
The Nobel Committee stated that Navi Pillay has led efforts to build a robust global legal system with extraordinary courage and integrity. She played a groundbreaking role in bringing to justice those responsible for grave crimes—such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide—committed across various parts of the world. Born into an Indian Tamil family in Durban, South Africa, during the era of apartheid, Pillay overcame severe discrimination and social deprivation in her youth to emerge as a lawyer. Her journey of struggle began with legal battles on behalf of rights activists—including the undisputed anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela—and later expanded to the international arena.
Throughout her long and distinguished career, she served with great dedication as a judge of the High Court of South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and the International Criminal Court (ICC). Additionally, she served as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and, more recently, as the head of the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Currently, she is serving as a judge in the genocide case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
During her tenure as a judge at the Rwanda Tribunal, she played a pivotal role in establishing rape and sexual violence as crimes against humanity and as elements of genocide. She also set a historic precedent by convicting an individual for incitement to genocide based solely on the dissemination of hate propaganda. The Nobel Committee notes that global security and legal systems are currently facing unprecedented pressure, with a growing tendency to bypass the law through the use of force. In such turbulent times, the uncompromising stance taken by figures like Navi Pillay to uphold the dignity of the courts and sustain the global rule of law serves as a profound inspiration to the world. Her lifelong contribution—fostering international fraternity and strengthening the institutional foundations of international courts in accordance with the ideals of Alfred Nobel’s will—will remain forever memorable to all who cherish peace.
