Despite mounting pressure from the United States, Malaysia remains steadfast in its long-standing decision not to recognize Israel as a state. The country has categorically stated that there will be no change to this policy, even as members of the US Congress call for a review of security and economic ties with Kuala Lumpur.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan revealed that the US State Department recently summoned Malaysia’s Ambassador to Washington, Muhammad Shahrul Ikram Yaakob. During the meeting, the ambassador clearly articulated Kuala Lumpur’s position on the matter.
Mohamad Hasan emphasized that Malaysia’s stance on Israel is neither new nor a reaction to any recent event; rather, successive Malaysian governments have adhered to this official policy from the very beginning.
Citing Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama, the Foreign Minister said, “This has always been Malaysia’s policy. Our immigration policy does not recognize the State of Israel or the Zionist regime. It is a long-standing, unwavering position.”
As a leading Muslim-majority nation, Malaysia maintains no diplomatic relations with Israel. In a show of solidarity and support for Palestinian rights, the country continues to enforce a ban on the entry of Israeli passport holders.
Earlier, on July 15, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim reaffirmed his government’s firm commitment to the policy of non-recognition of Israel. The Foreign Minister’s recent remarks serve to reiterate this historic stance.
