US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz has stated that the door remains open for Iran to engage in talks aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East; they can return to negotiations if they wish.
He made these remarks on Sunday while speaking at an ‘Al-Monitor Live’ event held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.
Responding to a question about whether the ongoing conflict with Iran is playing to Washington’s advantage, Waltz said, “I think so.”
Referring to the conflict with Iran—which began on February 28—he reiterated that Iran could return to negotiations through peaceful and diplomatic means if it chose to do so. However, he dismissed as “fanciful” the reports claiming that Tehran had demanded the lifting of US sanctions and compensation as conditions for entering into new talks.
Waltz noted that the Iranian regime is currently at its weakest point since 1979 and that its position is continuing to deteriorate. Citing economic pressures and the depreciation of the country’s currency, he said, “I hope they will return to negotiations peacefully and diplomatically.”
