Qatar has emphasized diplomatic dialogue over the imposition of sanctions to resolve the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran. Majed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry, stated that the recent US sanctions are unilateral and that a lasting solution to the crisis is possible only through dialogue.
At a press conference, Al-Ansari noted that these sanctions were not imposed based on decisions by the United Nations or any multilateral institution. Consequently, he suggested that questions regarding the justification for such measures should be directed at those who decided to impose them.
He stated that finding a diplomatic solution through dialogue has been Qatar’s priority from the outset. He urged all parties to actively participate in the ongoing discussions mediated by Qatar, Pakistan, and other regional nations. In his view, dialogue is the effective path to resolving the current crisis.
Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Al-Ansari remarked that any move by Iran to close the strait would be inconsistent with the freedom of navigation recognized under international law. He also affirmed that Qatar’s armed forces are prepared to counter any threats directed at the country by any party.
However, Qatar’s primary concern is maintaining normal shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz. He also emphasized the importance of resuming goods exports, ensuring global food and energy security, and keeping international supply chains operational.
Alongside Pakistan, Qatar is playing a mediating role in resolving the US-Iran crisis. Amidst this, an attack by Iran on a Qatari gas facility has occurred. Tehran has also launched multiple attacks on the US military base located at Al-Udeid in Qatar.
Meanwhile, Iran claims that Qatari forces shot down two of its fighter jets and detained three pilots at the onset of hostilities. Iran has also demanded access to the detained pilots.
