China has strongly opposed US plans to impose fresh economic sanctions on Iran and various parties maintaining trade relations with the country. Beijing stated that it would take all necessary measures to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests in response to such actions.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China categorically rejects such “unilateral and illegal sanctions” by the United States. He also indicated that the country would take appropriate steps to protect its interests.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the new economic sanctions last Monday. He warned that any country maintaining financial ties with Iran would face measures aimed at isolating it from the global financial system.
China is the largest buyer of Iranian oil. However, US sanctions and pressure targeting Iranian ports have recently impacted oil trade between the two nations.
Lin Jian further added that cooperation between China and Iran has long been conducted in accordance with international law; therefore, no external party should interfere with or obstruct the normal trade and cooperation between the two countries.
