The U.S. Congress held a vote—the seventh of its kind—aimed at curtailing President Donald Trump’s authority regarding a potential war with Iran. In a 50-49 vote, Trump succeeded in retaining his war powers. However, the margin in this congressional vote narrowed to just a single vote. With three Republicans voting against him, Trump finds himself in a rather precarious position.

This outcome suggests that he is losing even Republican support for a U.S.-Israeli military conflict with Iran. The bill in question sought to curb the U.S. President’s authority to launch an attack on Iran without congressional authorization. The three Republicans who broke ranks to vote against their party were Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Rand Paul.

However, Trump’s side was saved by Democratic Senator John Fetterman, a staunch supporter of Israel. Trump has previously disregarded the need for congressional approval—both prior to initiating military action against Iran and while such operations were underway. This occurred despite a law passed in 1973, under which Congress possesses the authority—based on a majority vote—to either declare war or block military action.
