Britain’s former Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, has been cleared by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) of any allegations regarding willful irregularities or negligence concerning her tax affairs. Following this decision, speculation has begun within political circles that she may once again enter the race for the leadership of the Labour Party. This news was reported by The Guardian online. Rayner has already paid approximately £40,000 in Stamp Duty, an amount she had initially underpaid. However, HMRC has stated that no penalties were imposed against her, nor was any evidence of tax evasion found.

In an interview, Rayner stated that the entire ordeal had taken a significant mental toll on her. She expressed particular distress over the intrusion into the private life of her disabled child. She further noted that the controversy had fostered a perception that she was acting in her own self-interest rather than on behalf of the general public. Since her resignation from the Shadow Cabinet last September, the investigation into her tax affairs had placed her under immense political pressure. Now that the investigation has concluded, she has the opportunity to return to frontline politics.

Rayner has signaled that she may participate in any potential leadership contest, adding that she understands the frustration felt by her party colleagues following Labour’s recent electoral setbacks. She further suggested that Prime Minister Keir Starmer should reflect on his own position. Meanwhile, it is reported that Health Secretary Wes Streeting is preparing to launch a leadership bid. Such a move could rapidly trigger a leadership crisis within the Labour Party. Within the party’s left-wing faction, in addition to Rayner, the names of former Prime Minister Ed Miliband and Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham are also being discussed as potential candidates.

Rayner affirmed that she would not initiate a “coup” or internal party revolt; however, she pledged to play her part in driving change from within the party. She emphasized that the issue of leadership is not about personal ambition, but rather about the future of the party and the restoration of public trust.
