Australia 2:0 Turkey

Turkey had stunned the world by finishing third in the 2002 World Cup. They had not been seen on the World Cup stage for a long 24 years since then. Finally, they returned to the tournament, boasting a squad of talented footballers playing for top European clubs. However, their comeback story did not have a happy ending; Turkey lost 2-0 to Australia in their opening match.

There were several heroes behind Australia’s victory at Vancouver’s BC Place Stadium. While Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe scored the goals, the most significant contribution came from goalkeeper Patrick Beach. The 22-year-old shot-stopper made eight saves, leaving Turkey frustrated.

Before the match, Australia coach Tony Popovic sprung a major surprise. He benched experienced captain and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, handing Beach a spot in the starting XI. He also left vice-captain Jackson Irvine out of the starting lineup, fielding 21-year-old midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler in his place. Consequently, ten of the players in Australia’s starting lineup were making their World Cup debuts.

Ultimately, Popovic’s decisions paid off. Turkey dominated possession and attacks from the very beginning of the match, but Beach stood as an obstacle every time. Meanwhile, Australia capitalized on opportunities to strike back with counter-attacks.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute. Receiving a precise long pass from Okon-Engstler, Irankunda broke through the Turkish defense and calmly slotted the ball into the net to put his team ahead.

Earlier, in the 27th minute, Turkey had created one of the match’s best chances. Beach skillfully denied a powerful shot from Real Madrid star Arda Güler. This was just one of several crucial saves the Australian goalkeeper made during the first half.

The pattern continued in the second half. In the 57th minute, Beach parried away a free-kick from Güler, conceding only a corner. The more Turkey pressed the attack, the more resolute Australia’s defense became.

Australia effectively sealed the match in the 75th minute. Connor Metcalfe picked up the ball in midfield and drove forward; his spectacular shot from about 25 yards out found the back of the net, extending the lead to 2–0.

Turkey was unable to mount a comeback in the remaining time. Consequently, the team—making its return to the World Cup after 24 years—had to leave the pitch in disappointment.

With this victory, Australia has moved level with the United States on three points in Group D. The two teams are set to face each other in Seattle next Friday.
