Eighty nations have called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to normalize maritime traffic. These countries also condemned attacks carried out by Iran and its allied Houthi group. This information was reported in a live update by the Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera.
On Thursday (September 24), Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani read out a joint statement on behalf of the 80 nations during a session of the UN General Assembly.
The statement noted that Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz pose a threat to international security as well as the right to and freedom of navigation. Consequently, international trade and energy security are being jeopardized.
“We call for the full restoration of navigation rights and regulations without any delay,” the statement added.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s vital energy transport routes. Vast quantities of oil and gas from the Middle East reach international markets via this waterway. Tehran declared the strait closed following the outbreak of hostilities between the US-Israel alliance and Iran last February.
