Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his sons. However, he did not provide specific details regarding when or where the attempt took place, or which of his sons was targeted.
Netanyahu made this claim on Monday. He did so at a time when his ruling political coalition is trailing in opinion polls ahead of the general election scheduled for October.
A conflict between Iran and the US-Israel alliance began last February with a joint attack on Tehran. Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in that attack, along with four members of his family—including his daughter, Bushra, and his 14-month-old granddaughter, Zahra.
According to The Jerusalem Post, Netanyahu made the claim about the assassination attempt on his son during an interview with the conservative Israeli media outlet Channel 14.
Netanyahu said, “It is an incredible incident. Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to kill him.”
“Netanyahu has two sons and a daughter. According to The Jerusalem Post, Israeli authorities decided last July to provide additional personal security for his two sons and his wife.”
Netanyahu made this claim while responding to reports that an Israeli security agency had refused to provide security for former Israeli military chief Gadi Eisenkot. Eisenkot is running neck-and-neck with Netanyahu in the race to become Prime Minister in the upcoming election.
Netanyahu advocated for providing round-the-clock security for Eisenkot, stating that it was not a luxury. He added, “Without it, the Iranians will succeed.”
Netanyahu has two sons and a daughter. According to The Jerusalem Post, Israeli authorities decided last July to provide additional personal security for his two sons and his wife. Netanyahu’s eldest son, 35-year-old Yair Netanyahu, has been staying in Miami, USA, since the beginning of 2024. The use of Israeli taxpayers’ money for his security has sparked controversy.
Meanwhile, Iran has vowed to avenge the killing of Ali Khamenei and members of his family. One week after Khamenei’s death, his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was announced as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
Mojtaba Khamenei has not been seen in public since assuming the role. However, in a message released during his father’s burial, he pledged to exact “blood vengeance” for the former Supreme Leader.
