Two people were killed when a military helicopter crashed in central Texas. The helicopter went down in a field south of the village of Salado. Police arrived at the scene after receiving reports of the wreckage.
Two individuals were found dead at the site. The US Army stated that the crashed aircraft was an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, which was stationed at the nearby Fort Hood military base—one of the largest US Army installations.
Cliff Coleman, a spokesperson for the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, said that upon arrival, officials discovered the crash site along with a large fire. He noted that the fire was “spiraling out of control very quickly.”
The US Army has stated that an investigation into the incident is underway and emergency recovery efforts are continuing.
Brigadier General Ethan Diven, Acting Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division, said, “Our immediate priority is to secure the scene and assist in initial recovery efforts.”
According to the US Army, the AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine, four-blade multi-role attack helicopter capable of conducting armed reconnaissance, close combat, mobile strikes, and vertical tactical operations.
