Until now, memories of a World Cup victory were embodied by the golden trophy and the medal worn around the neck. Now, that memory will also find a place on the finger. For the first time on football’s grandest stage, the champion team will be awarded a “Championship Ring.”

FIFA has announced that this special honor for winners is being introduced for the first time in World Cup history. Championship rings have long been a tradition in popular US leagues like the NBA, NFL, and MLB; this concept is now entering the world of football through a FIFA tournament hosted in North America.

According to the FIFA website, a total of 2,026 rings will be produced to commemorate the World Cup year. Of these, only 30 are reserved for the champion team’s players and coaching staff. The remaining 1,996 rings will be released to the market worldwide as officially licensed merchandise.

One side of the ring will feature the design of the World Cup trophy, while the other will display the champion team’s identity, colors, and emblem. Each ring created for the winning team will bear a unique serial number. They will be custom-made to fit the owner’s finger size and will come with a certificate of authenticity.

Immediately following the final, the winning team’s captain and head coach will be presented with commemorative, temporary rings on the awards podium. Subsequently, 30 rings will be manufactured to the exact measurements of the players and staff and formally handed over to them.

In this year’s final, Argentina is vying for its fourth title, while Spain is aiming for its second. Regardless of which team wins, alongside the trophy and gold medals, they will become the first team in World Cup history to wear FIFA’s new “Championship Ring.”
