Centering on a visit to Taiwan, China has imposed a one-year travel ban on four Members of Parliament (MPs) from New Zealand. New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that this marks the first time China has taken such action against the country’s MPs. The four individuals in question visited Taiwan in May. The Chinese Embassy informed them that the ban could be reduced or lifted if they offered an apology. China has long claimed the self-governing island of Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and continues its efforts to limit the island’s international engagement.

The MPs subject to the sanctions are Maureen Pugh, David Wilson, and Laura MacClure—members of the ruling coalition—and Duncan Webb of the opposition Labour Party. During their visit, they met with Taiwan’s Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-lung. A spokesperson for New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that New Zealand MPs have been visiting Taiwan for decades, and such visits do not conflict with New Zealand’s “One China” policy.

Meanwhile, Laura MacClure, an MP from New Zealand’s ACT Party, described the move as a form of foreign interference. She stated, “I will not apologize for visiting Taiwan.” She also expressed surprise, noting that while similar visits have taken place in the past, this is the first time they have faced such sanctions. New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, has expressed concern regarding the matter. It is worth noting that New Zealand has adhered to the “One China” policy since establishing diplomatic relations with China in 1972.

Under this policy, the country recognizes Beijing as the sole legitimate government of China and does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taipei. However, like many other nations, New Zealand maintains regular informal contact with Taiwan. According to analysts, this incident serves as yet another example of the international diplomatic tensions surrounding Taiwan and could potentially impact future relations between China and New Zealand.
