Approximately 100 soldiers from the Israeli army’s Givati Brigade—specifically the ‘Tzabar’ Battalion—have mutinied against their commanders. They abandoned their weapons and left the ‘Sde Teiman’ base in the Negev Desert. According to the Israeli news outlet ‘Ynet,’ the incident stemmed from a protest fueled by grievances against their commanders. Al Jazeera reported the story.
An Israeli army spokesperson stated that the dispute arose when the battalion commander ordered the removal of symbols and insignia associated with “traditional, unconventional practices” involving both veteran and new soldiers.
Ynet reported, “The soldiers claimed that the removed symbols had accompanied them during combat operations in Gaza and Lebanon and had been passed down from one generation of soldiers to the next. They viewed these mementos as symbols of their deep emotional bond with the battalion and its heritage.”
Citing an unnamed military source, the Israeli newspaper ‘Maariv’ reported that, as a result of this incident, the battalion has been rendered unfit to participate in the combat operations in Gaza for which it was preparing.
Meanwhile, the newspaper ‘Israel Hayom’ reported that the soldiers and commanders left the base for their homes carrying only their personal bags, leaving their military equipment and weaponry behind at the base.
