U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a three-day ceasefire will take place between Russia and Ukraine. He made this announcement yesterday, Friday.
Trump shared the news of the Russia-Ukraine ceasefire through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. In the post, he stated that the ceasefire would begin on Saturday (today) and continue until Monday.
The U.S. President wrote in his post, “I am pleased to announce that a three-day ceasefire (May 9, 10, and 11) will go into effect between Russia and Ukraine.”
Shortly after Trump’s announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the news of the three-day ceasefire in a post on the social media platform X.
Zelenskyy stated that a three-day ceasefire had been arranged as part of U.S. peace efforts aimed at bringing an end to the conflict, which has been ongoing for over four years.
Later, Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President, stated that this agreement was reached following a recent telephone conversation between Putin and Trump. Consensus on the matter was established during telephone communications with the U.S. administration, and subsequently, U.S. representatives reached out to Kyiv.
The Russian official further noted that during the telephone conversation, both presidents emphasized that their respective nations had been allies during World War II and discussed the possibility of implementing a ceasefire during the Victory Day celebrations.
Russia celebrates its victory in World War II on May 9, a day known as “Victory Day.” Ahead of this occasion, Moscow had previously announced a two-day unilateral ceasefire in Ukraine. The Ukrainian side, however, stated that they too had proposed a ceasefire, but Moscow had disregarded it.
Announcing the three-day ceasefire yesterday, Trump said, “This request was made directly by me.” He expressed his gratitude to the presidents of both Russia and Ukraine for agreeing to the proposal.
Trump added, “I hope that this marks the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and difficult conflict.”
