A US military helicopter has crashed while flying over the Strait of Hormuz. However, US President Donald Trump stated that both pilots on board are “fine.” This information came to light on Tuesday.
It is not yet clear why the aircraft crashed while flying over this vital waterway. The region has long been identified as a major flashpoint in the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Trump spoke to reporters early today before boarding the presidential aircraft, “Air Force One.” He stated that the pilots were “fine” and that no one was injured in the incident.
Trump added, “We are going to release a report tomorrow. But the pilots are fine—yes.”
The US newspaper The New York Times first reported the news, citing two individuals familiar with the incident.
Following a ceasefire last April, Iran and Israel engaged in direct tit-for-tat attacks for the first time between Sunday night and Monday morning. This event raised fears of a full-scale war in the Middle East, though both sides subsequently stepped back from the conflict. Trump’s comments came just hours later.
Tehran has maintained strict control over the Strait of Hormuz since the US and Israel initiated the “Iran war.” Typically, about one-fifth of the world’s total oil supply is transported through this waterway.
As part of the agreement to end the conflict, Trump has pledged to normalize shipping traffic through this crucial maritime route.
Speaking to reporters today about a potential deal with Iran, Trump said, “We are in the final stages of a very excellent deal. This agreement will in no way allow Iran to build nuclear weapons.”
Trump further stated, “The strait will be opened as soon as the deal is signed. It will be opened immediately after signing, which could happen within the next two or three days.”
In the weeks since both sides agreed to a ceasefire, Trump has repeatedly claimed that they are very close to reaching an agreement. However, no such formal agreement has materialized so far.
