The US House of Representatives seeks to halt war with Iran. This marks the third time such a resolution has passed in this lower chamber of the US Congress. A War Powers resolution was approved on Tuesday night by a vote of 220–204. This move aims to limit President Donald Trump’s authority to conduct military operations without Congressional approval; however, whether Trump will abide by the resolution remains his decision. Reporting on this, the Associated Press notes that, much like two previous attempts last summer, all Democratic members voted in favor of the proposal. This time, however, a few more Republicans joined them.
A total of seven House Republicans voted for the resolution, with three of them supporting such a measure for the first time. Explaining his vote, Iowa Republican Congressman Zach Nunn stated that since opportunities for dialogue have closed, Congressional approval is now required to conduct long-term military operations. He remarked, “I will not support another open-ended war.” Yet, no such resolution has reached the President so far; should it reach Trump, he is widely expected to veto it. Florida Republican Representative Brian Mast, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, questioned which military assets the Democrats intend to withdraw from the Middle East, noting that Iran remains a threat in the region. Mast asserted that Trump opposes “endless wars” and is bringing them to an end.
