US forces have launched fresh, intense attacks on Iran. US President Donald Trump himself announced this information.
A Reuters report states that the US military carried out new strikes on Tuesday targeting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in Iran.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the strikes, stating they were in response to recent attempts to attack commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and US troops deployed in the region.
In a post on the social media platform X, CENTCOM announced that US forces began striking IRGC targets at 12:00 PM Eastern Time today.
Al Jazeera’s live coverage reported that sounds of explosions were heard in various parts of southern Iran.
Multiple rounds of explosions occurred in the Iranian cities of Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, Konarak, and Chabahar. However, no details regarding the extent of the damage or casualties have been reported so far.
This latest offensive follows a series of retaliatory attacks exchanged between the US and Iran leading up to Monday night.
Meanwhile, Iran has reacted strongly to the US strikes; both the country and the IRGC have threatened the United States with severe punishment.
