US federal investigators have issued subpoenas to several relatives of Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar as part of a criminal investigation into her family’s immigration history. The New York Times reported this on Tuesday. Citing individuals familiar with the investigation, the newspaper stated that Omar’s sister, Sahra Noor, and at least one other family member received subpoenas. A day earlier, on Monday, officials from the Department of Homeland Security searched Omar’s home in Washington, D.C., removing documents in several boxes. According to the report, a key aspect of the investigation is whether Omar’s late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, provided false information or withheld crucial details in immigration applications prior to obtaining US citizenship.

On Monday, Ilhan Omar criticized the search of her home by federal officials. She described the operation as an attempt by the Donald Trump administration to intimidate political opponents. In a post on the social media platform X, she wrote, “Make no mistake. This is an attempt to target political enemies and use federal law enforcement agencies for political purposes.” Reaffirming her resolve, Omar added, “I will not be silenced.” However, the report did not include a full statement from the relevant authorities regarding the allegations under investigation. On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump claimed in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, that Ilhan Omar had committed fraud. Trump wrote, “America wants answers, and we want them now!” However, the post provided no detailed evidence to support his claim.

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance stated that he had not been informed in advance about the search of Ilhan Omar’s home. The investigation into her family’s immigration history and the search of her residence have sparked fresh controversy in US politics. However, the report contains no information indicating that the allegations under investigation have yet been proven in court.
