US President Donald Trump has warned that any country assisting Iran or engaging in trade with it will face “dire economic consequences.” He issued this warning in a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday.
In the post, he declared an unprecedented economic war against Iran. The US President stated that he is initiating the “toughest economic measures” against the country; however, he did not provide specific details or name any particular nation.
Trump stated that if any country’s banks, businesses, airports, or government agencies provide financial or commercial assistance to Iran, they will face “severe” punishment from the United States.
Trump’s announcement comes as the conflict between the US and Iran has dragged on for nearly six months with no immediate diplomatic solution in sight. Meanwhile, shipping operations in the vital Strait of Hormuz are facing significant disruptions.
Earlier, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had indicated that Washington would take even stricter measures to economically isolate Iran. There are allegations that Russia is providing military aid and drone technology to Iran, while China maintains trade relations by purchasing Iranian oil.
Trump claimed that Iran’s navy and air force have been largely destroyed and the country’s military capabilities severely crippled. However, he noted that future negotiations with Iran remain possible, provided a key condition is met: Iran must not, under any circumstances, develop nuclear weapons.
