Despite failing to secure a deal to end the war in Ukraine or avoid getting entangled in a conflict with Iran, US President Donald Trump believes he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. However, he has also expressed skepticism about actually receiving it.

On Wednesday, Trump stated that he did not know who would be awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is set to announce this year’s award on Friday.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said, “I don’t know what decision they will make. But there is a reputation that they perhaps don’t give the award to people like me.”

Since returning to the White House for a second term last year, Trump has repeatedly asserted that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

He told reporters, “I think the time has come. However, I was deeply honored indirectly last time as well. The recipient of the award said that no one in history was more deserving of it than President Trump.”

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado presented the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump. She handed the medal to him in January, aiming to garner US support for her political efforts in Venezuela.

Trump has claimed he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his intervention in eight conflicts since assuming his second term last January.

He claims that leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize; however, there is no way to verify the authenticity of these nominations.

Questions have been raised regarding Trump’s diplomatic role in some of the conflicts he claims to have resolved. In fact, hostilities have reignited in certain areas—including the Democratic Republic of the Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border.

Trump has also failed to resolve the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. Yet, on the very first day of assuming office for his second term, he had pledged to end this war.

Meanwhile, tensions that have persisted for the past seven months have intensified due to attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran. This has severely disrupted global energy supplies and driven up fuel prices. The issue is also influencing US domestic politics ahead of the midterm elections in November.

Potential candidates for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize include Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court (ICC), and the UN Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories.
