El-Sayed faces intense criticism over election rally with Obama.

Former US President Barack Obama is set to join Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed for a campaign rally in Detroit on October 24. However, this political alliance between El-Sayed and Obama has sparked criticism.

El-Sayed had previously been a vocal critic of various policies during Obama’s presidency. He criticized the Obama administration’s stance on war, civil liberties, immigration, healthcare, and economic policy, arguing that fundamental changes were not achieved in these areas.

In an article written in 2012, El-Sayed refused to view Obama’s re-election for a second term as a victory for progressives. He later criticized Obama’s policies as being overly centrist. Even when running for Governor of Michigan in 2017, he publicly acknowledged policy disagreements with Obama.

However, El-Sayed’s current political stance reflects a comparatively positive view of Obama. His campaign team stated that Obama’s 2008 election victory inspired El-Sayed during his youth. Although he disagrees with some of Obama’s decisions, El-Sayed views him as a capable leader committed to the American people, according to his campaign.

El-Sayed narrowly defeated former Congresswoman Haley Stevens in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary this past August. He has garnered support from progressive Democrats, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His opponent in the general election is the Republican candidate and former Congressman Mike Rogers.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris also recently joined El-Sayed for a campaign event in Detroit. Obama’s presence is also expected to play a significant role in his campaign. In particular, Obama’s popularity could be crucial for El-Sayed in securing the support of Black voters in Detroit.

The Senate election in Michigan could play a pivotal role in determining which party secures a majority in the next US Congress. Consequently, Obama’s direct involvement in El-Sayed’s campaign is viewed as a significant political move for the Democrats.
