The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.6. On the other hand, the Philippine agency said, its intensity was 6.9.
Philippine Institute of Volcanology Seismology official Teresito Bacolcol told AP they advised coastal residents of southern Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental provinces to immediately evacuate to higher ground.
He said, as a result of the earthquake, there is a risk of a one meter (three tenths 2 feet) tsunami in the coastal area.
