A Russian drone attack has struck a residential building in Romania, a NATO member state. The incident sparked a fire in the building and left at least two people injured. The BBC reported this information, citing officials from the country.
According to the BBC report, officials from the European Union (EU) and NATO have strongly condemned the incident. The attack took place on Friday in the Romanian city of Galați, which is situated near the country’s eastern borders with Ukraine and Moldova.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Russia has crossed yet another line of aggression. Meanwhile, NATO characterized the incident as “reckless” on Russia’s part.
The BBC notes that, throughout the war with Ukraine—which has spanned over four years—Russian drones have crossed into Romanian airspace on several occasions. However, this marks the first time that a Romanian citizen has been injured in such an incident.
Russia has not yet issued any comment regarding the event.
Romania’s emergency management authority reported that the drone’s full payload detonated, igniting a fire on the tenth floor of the apartment block.
In response, the country’s President, Nicușor Dan, convened an emergency meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense. He described the Russian drone strike as the “most serious incident” to have occurred on Romanian territory.
Romania’s Ministry of Defense stated that two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled immediately after a drone was detected in the airspace. However, Army Brigadier General Gheorghe Maxim noted that there was a window of only four minutes between the moment the drone was detected and the moment it struck—a timeframe he described as extremely limited for mounting a response.
Following the incident, the country has further bolstered security measures in its border regions and is conducting intensified surveillance to monitor the situation. Romania asserts that regional security risks stemming from the conflict in Ukraine are steadily escalating.
