Rishi Sunak (born 12 May 1980) is a British politician who has served as Chancellor of the Exchequer since February 2020. He is a member of the Conservative Party & previously served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) from – 2015.
Sunak was born in Southampton, England, to a Punjabi-Hindu family… His father was a successful entrepreneur & his mother was a doctor. Sunak gained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy, Politics & Economics from Oxford University & then an MBA from Stanford University in California.
He began his career as an analyst for Goldman Sachs in London, before joining the venture capital firm The Children’s Investment Fund Management in – 2004. In 2008, he founded his own investment firm, The Investment Fund for Foundations.
In 2015, Sunak was elected as the MP for Richmond (Yorks). He quickly rose through the ranks of the Conservative Party. He was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury in – 2019 & then Chancellor of the Exchequer in – 2020, following the resignation of Sajid Javid.
Sunak has served as Chancellor during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has overseen the implementation of the furlough scheme, which has helped to protect millions of jobs during the crisis. He has also announced a range of other support measures, including a temporary cut to VAT, business grants and loan guarantees, to help stimulate the economy.
Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of Indian billionaire Narayana Murthy. They have two children.
