Russian President Vladimir Putin has arrived in New Delhi, the Indian capital, to attend the BRICS summit. During this visit, he will hold bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on enhancing cooperation in the defense, energy, and technology sectors. NDTV reported this news.
Upon his arrival at Delhi’s Palam Air Force Station on Friday, Putin was welcomed by India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Friday’s bilateral meeting would cover strategic issues such as the development of BrahMos missiles, the supply of S-400 systems, Su-57 fighter jets, and the installation of new civil nuclear reactors. Putin is also scheduled to address the plenary session of the BRICS Business Forum.
Additionally, Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting India after a gap of seven years. On Saturday evening, Modi and Xi Jinping will discuss trade, investment, and the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Modi will also meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Friday; this marks Pezeshkian’s first visit to India as President.
The Middle East and Ukraine conflicts, along with various economic challenges, are expected to dominate the agenda of this year’s BRICS summit. The BRICS forum was established in 2009 to increase the influence of emerging economies in institutions controlled by Western powers. Although it initially comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, the bloc has now expanded to 11 members. Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia joined the alliance in 2024, while Indonesia joined last year. India is hosting this year’s summit in its capacity as the current chair.
