Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has sharply criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government’s policies. She has urged Washington to adopt a tougher stance toward Israel should Netanyahu return to power following the upcoming election.
In a television interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Clinton stated that while she has consistently supported Israel, she opposes Netanyahu’s government and his policies.
Clinton said, “I love Israel, but I detest Netanyahu’s government and his policies. I love America, but what is happening under the Trump administration is terrible for the United States.”
She further remarked that the current developments in Israel are detrimental to the country, just as the situation in the US is harmful to America. She argued that if Netanyahu becomes Prime Minister again after the upcoming election, the US must take a firmer position when dealing with the new Israeli government.
Clinton’s comments come at a time when the electoral contest in Israel’s political landscape is intensifying. Recent opinion polls indicate that opposition parties are still leading the coalition headed by Netanyahu; however, neither side has yet come close to securing the parliamentary majority required to form a government.
Netanyahu is seeking to become Prime Minister once again through the upcoming election. If successful, this would mark his seventh term in office. However, recent months have shown signs of a weakening in his ruling coalition, suggesting he may have to rely more heavily on coalition allies to maintain his political standing.
Clinton’s remarks have added a new dimension to the ongoing debate regarding Israel-US relations and Netanyahu’s political future.
