The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a Costa Rican reserve located in the province of Puntarenas, in the Tilarán mountain range. It is located approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the province’s capital city, San José. The reserve covers an area of 10,500 hectares (25,907 acres) and is a vital part of the Monteverde Cloud Forest, a region known for its unique microclimate and biodiversity….

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve was founded in 1972 by several scientists and conservationists, including Dr. George Powell, Dr. Leslie Holdridge, and Dr. Paul Ehrlich. It was established in order to protect the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the largest tropical montane cloud forest in Central America. The reserve’s main purpose is to preserve the unique species of flora and fauna that inhabit the area.

The reserve is home to a rich variety of plant and animal species, including more than 100 species of – mammals, 400 species of Birds, 120 species of Reptiles & Amphibians, & thousands of species of Plants. The reserve is also home to the endangered Resplendent Quetzal, the national bird of Guatemala. Other notable species of wildlife include the jaguar, ocelot, margay, sloth, and howler monkey.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve is a popular destination for ecotourism and scientific research. Visitors can explore the reserve on guided hikes, horseback rides, and canopy tours.
