California authorities have arrested a man who was loitering suspiciously near a golf course owned by President Donald Trump in Los Angeles.
President Trump was scheduled to attend a fundraising dinner at the location.
Investigators identified the arrested individual as 38-year-old Jenin John Tayele. He was arrested near the Trump National Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. A pistol and illegal ammunition were recovered from him.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department stated that Tayele was observed wandering around various parts of the golf course, taking photos and videos, and monitoring security operations.
He was arrested on Sunday afternoon (local time) on charges of carrying a concealed firearm and possessing prohibited ammunition.
In a press release, the Sheriff’s Department stated that plainclothes federal agents had alerted local authorities about the suspect on Sunday afternoon.
After detaining the man, police discovered that the El Segundo Police Department was seeking him in connection with a robbery.
California has some of the strictest gun control laws in the United States; magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds are prohibited there.
The Sheriff’s Department reported that a search was conducted at the man’s home due to potential security concerns.
During the search, authorities recovered an AR-platform rifle, a .45 caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, a large quantity of pistol and rifle ammunition, and several notebooks containing alarming statements.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Officials indicated that additional charges could be filed against Tayele later.
