Italy has announced the deployment of warships to the Bab al-Mandab Strait to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels. Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated that if the strait were to become impassable, it could lead to a severe economic catastrophe. Therefore, Rome will not wait for a joint European Union decision to address the situation. Al Jazeera Online reported this development.
The Italian Defense Minister emphasized that the country possesses the military capabilities to protect maritime routes. He asserted that the current complex situation cannot be allowed to deteriorate further due to bureaucratic delays in decision-making. Connecting the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the Bab al-Mandab Strait serves as a crucial link for international trade between Asia and Europe via the Suez Canal; approximately 12 to 15 percent of global trade passes through this route.
The strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait has surged significantly following Iran’s seizure of control over the Strait of Hormuz earlier this year amidst tensions with the United States and Israel. Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, have become increasingly reliant on this strait as a primary alternative route for Middle Eastern oil supplies.
However, in recent weeks, Iran-backed Houthi rebels have rapidly advanced to seize full control of Yemen’s western Red Sea coast, including several strategically vital islands. This has created a risk of the Houthis establishing sole dominance over the waterway. Despite various military efforts by the United States and the European Union, the intense conflict in Yemen has left the international community facing a major challenge in ensuring the security of this vital trade route. It is against this backdrop that Italy has decided to deploy warships.
